These web mapping applications bring together various aspects of Wisconsin's geology.

Although they may look simple on first glance, there is a groundswell of geologic information being packed into these mapping apps.  Zoom in to take a closer look at your favorite locations.  You can tap on many features such as outcrops to bring up popup windows containing description, source, web sites, PDF documents, photos and other information about each feature.   Detailed property boundaries & ownership is also displayed when zoomed in.

One of the goals for this app is to keep the map simple in order to make it easy-to-read and understand, even for the non-geologist.

The target audience for this app is the Wisconsinite who wonders what's in their backyard, or wants to see what the professional geologists have interpreted and recorded in an area of interest.   Use this app to plan hiking destinations or your own geology expeditions;  Load this app on your smart phone and use it as a guide. Yes, it is GPS enabled!  At this time it does require a fast internet connection.

This project is mostly focused on Wisconsin but may include some sites of interest in adjacent states including Michigan (especially the Upper Peninsula), Iowa, and Minnesota.  These areas are well-known for outdoor beauty.  Those not overly familiar with geology might think, "Pretty? Yes, but is the geology really that interesting?".  It is true that today the Upper Midwest has no volcanoes or tall majestic mountains, but it once did. I intend to show you where there is evidence of violent volcanic eruptions, of continental plates merging, soaring mountains, warm tropical seas, and of course of the great continental glaciers that once covered the area.   Use these GIS app to explore these sites and read this companion blog.
I hope this project enriches your outdoor experiences, or at least gives you something to think about as you drive across Wisconsin.
